How to Choose the Right Chandelier Size for Your Room
A chandelier that's too small looks lost; one that's too big makes a room feel cramped. Designers use two simple rules of thumb.
How wide should it be?
Measure the length and width of the room in feet and add them together. The total is a good chandelier width in inches.
- A 12 ft by 14 ft sitting room: 12 + 14 = 26, so look for a chandelier about 26 inches wide.
- A 10 ft by 12 ft bedroom: 10 + 12 = 22, so about 22 inches wide.
Over a dining table, choose a chandelier roughly half to two thirds the width of the table instead.
How high should it hang?
In a room people walk under, leave at least about 7 feet between the floor and the bottom of the chandelier. Over a dining table, the bottom usually sits around 30 to 34 inches above the table top.
For high ceilings in halls, churches and event centres, hang it lower and go bigger, or use two or three matching pieces in a line.
Bulbs and brightness
Warm white bulbs give the soft, golden look most people want from a chandelier. Use LED bulbs: they run cooler, last longer and cost far less to run.
